The maximum log diameter stated is intended as a guide only. Splitting performance depends on the type and condition of the timber. Logs containing large knots, twisted grain or particularly tough fibres may prove more difficult to split, even if they are below the recommended maximum diameter. Conversely, straight-grained timber may split successfully even when exceeding the suggested maximum size.
