I only wish I’d bought one sooner. This electric kinetic log splitter speeds up firewood prep so much I have it done in less than half the time compared to my old 4 ton hydraulic version.
It arrives boxed and well packaged in protective polystyrene. Assembly is required (installing the legs, wheels, operating handle, log supports and the cage. It comes with a user manual that could be better but, between the instructions and online pictures for reference, 2 of us had it built in under an hour. It’s a heavy beast and a second pair of helping hands are useful.
It’s easy to operate using two levers that engage and then activate the ram. The kinetic energy is quite significant and the machine does jolt about a bit. It’s not terrible, but fixing it to the ground using bolts through holes in the legs may be a good idea (I plan on doing this). It’s quiet when the motors running but fairly noisy when the Ram slams forward and then comes to a sudden stop on the return, so I’ve been using it in a shed so as not to bother the neighbours.
In terms of performance, it’s impressive. It powers through hard logs and splits or smashes them into lengths of firewood. I’ve found it even copes fine with hard seasoned wood as long as it’s not too knotty or oversized. It’s advertised as able to split logs up to 30cm diameter, and it can; as long as the wood is generally straight grained and not too gnarly. The 10 tonnes of force does an amazing job of splitting lumbar and it’s possible to get through surprisingly big lumps of timber - although they sometimes require 2-3 goes with the Ram (let it spool up and get back to speed for a couple of seconds before attacking the log with the ram again). If the log is misshapen or really knotty it can spring out of position and bounce into the cage. It happens very quickly, so it’s probably worth keeping the cage installed even though it can get in the way of fast loading/unloading.
For a machine that plugs into the standard UK mains it really has some power. It seems sturdy enough and well made, so I’d say it’s reasonably priced and I’m pleased with it.
I have just replaced my old Titan 7.5 ton hydraulic log splitter with a new 10 ton Crytec kinetic one, the titan done a good job for a while, fairly quiet to operate, a bit slow but that never troubled me, however the amount of hydraulic oil it leaks was alarming, the Crytec on the other had it a bit harsh and aggressive but boy does it split logs. And obviously no oil leaks. I would recommend a kinetic log splitter over a hydraulic one every day.
I have been looking for a kinetic log splitter for ages and then saw this one, good price, and powerful 10 tonne force. Most others were 5 or 7 tonne.
This is one of the few which is at a comfortable working height, it's pretty good but could do with being a little bit higher, it makes your back ache after a while. I might make a raised platform for it.
It's really fast, and was capable of splitting some really knotty stringy apple tree wood. Very impressed.
My biggest problem was when the ram returns to home, it returns so damn quickly and hits a hard stop which jolts the machine backwards about 30mm. I did try making my own damper cushion which helped a bit, I also fitted some weaker springs for the ram return but it didn't work once it got covered in dirt and wood chips, the ram kept getting stuck forward, so I fitted the original spring again at it was fine. I would just recommend fixing this machine to the floor to overcome this issue. Otherwise, very happy.
Bought this as I have a oil ram splitter on the way out.. Boy this thing can split logs fast.. Easy set up.. Delivery was tracked all the way.. Very happy with this splitter.
Very impressive machine, quick and powerful, should have bought one years ago. Much better than the hydraulic splitters I’ve used.
Minor criticism is the flat metal plate at the end of the splitter isn’t large enough to stop large logs rolling off but it’s not a big job to put a bigger platform on.
Great little machine, eats work, easy to operate.
Response to my initial email enquiry was within 2 minutes. I ordered a chipper on Thursday morning and it arrived on my drive on Friday lunchtime…fully assembled which was more than I was expecting. The machine is great and my subsequent queries have been responded to straight away too. Very impressed. Well done crytec
